Australian author and well known global warming expert, Tim Flannery has released a new climate forecast. His last report was released in 2005 but the recent report explains that the world is in a more dire state than expected. Flannery suggests in the report that it is necessary to come up with new scientific ways to combat CO2 emissions; one possible solution is "dimming" of CO2 with sulphur.
On Monday the professor spoke to Australian parliament at a business and sustainability conference where he said that the world is more sensitive and global greenhouse gas emissions are hurting the atmosphere more than ever now. His report calls for a new scientific plan. Regardless of how much emissions are decreased in the future, they have already taken a harsh toll on the environment.
Professor Flannery suggests that we now need to consider ways of removing the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. It's no longer enough just to cut back on emissions. One way he suggests doing this is by releasing sulphur into the atmosphere. By putting sulphur into the earth's stratosphere it could be possible to slow global warming by protecting the earth from the sun. One way to do this would be to incorporate sulphur with jet fuel. Professor Flannery urged that this would have to happen within the next five years, especially if the problem with pollution continues on the same route it has been on.
However, the proposed plan could have strange effects on the colour of the sky.
