European Commission Targets Youth in Fight against Climate Change

In May 2006 the European Commission launched a public awareness raising campaign against climate change. Today the campaign is entering its final stage that will be collected in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria. The campaign, dubbed "You control climate change", aims to gather young people in a pro-active dialogue based on media sources. The campaign aims to gain support and interest through television advertisements, and offers a contest for the creation of a virtual community of "changers" who will be serious about fighting climate change through modifications to their everyday activities.

The campaign includes a bike race around Bucharest and campaign stands at Ekofestival 2008 in Prague. The campaign will run until mid 2009. Television advertisements will be launched starting this month and will show various ways to reduce green house gas emissions through everyday lifestyle choices. The TV ads will be launched on numerous channels which are popular in youth culture.

An internet campaign will be set up as well to encourage youth to "be a changer" and will allow young people to discuss environmental issues via chat rooms and blogs.

Stavros Dimas, the European Environment Commissioner said, "Young people have a strong vested interest in helping to bring climate change under control because they will otherwise have to live with its increasingly severe consequences over the coming decades. This successful campaign is raising young people's awareness of the climate change threat and showing them how they can contribute to fighting it by making 'green' choices in their daily lives."
