Also different batteries give different distances on each charge. A 36 Volt battery might get you about 25 miles; Silicon and Lithium Ion batteries give some of the best range, a 60V Lithium Ion battery might give a range of 50 miles between charges, sometimes even 100 miles. Depends on the exact chemistry of the battery and also the make-up of the bike itself.

It’s all about the motor really. 2000Watt is about 30mph top speed, 3000W around 50 mph, 5000W around 80mph.

I think that most mechanical watches these days are self-winding. From the cheaper ones up to Rolexes- the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, the popular Rolex that you always tend to see, is self-winding. The term ‘perpetual’ means just that, self-winding.
Leather saddles

Leather saddles are great.
I have to run a chain through mine though, when I park it up, because it’s very likely to be stolen.

I like all the leather bags too, the small ones that go under the saddle, and even panniers. But they seem a little excessive and more ’for the sake of it’. Plus they’re more likely to be bought brand new, and brand new leather isn’t as eco as second-hand stuff- well, in some circumstances it can be, I *think*, but that’s debatable.

Samsung Reclaim- green mobile/cell

Seems pretty sound to me. The green benefits are: constructed with 80% corn-fed recyclable material (bioplastics); no paper manual; packaging 100% recyclable, made from 70% recycled material; packaging/warranty printed with soy inks; every purchase includes donation to a land conservation charity.

Has other good features which make it a viable choice of phone: QWERTY keyboard, bluetooth 2.0, web browsing, 2 megapix camera and 3X zoom with video capture, GPS, expandable memory, and cheap at .

I’ve only read about it being on sale in the USA and Canada; anyone know if it’s available anywhere else?

South Africa- Tariff Guidelines Approved

Yeah I heard about this. Good move by the SA government. I think the problem is getting renewable onto the grid as main suppliers of grid energy, as coal is the main contributor to the grid and most renewable energy sources have generally been tributaries/minor.
A key chance for improvement in this area is the electrification of many rural areas, which, is electrified using renewable sources, would guarantee a renewable infrastructure which would last.
Green funerals

In fact that article above^ about burial at sea mentions a good book- the Natural Death Handbook. Probably good reading for anyone interested in green burials (I haven’t read it)
Green funerals

I remember reading a piece in the Daily Mail (a nasty English newspaper) about a green funeral that went ’completely wrong’. The article seemed to be propoganda against alternative ways of living (and after-life) by a conservative and unprogressive newspaper. It’s important to be careful, though. Green funerals are new to many people and we might not know what to expect.

I also read about a burial at sea. That’s the way I’d like to buried. The article is here guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/jul/25/sea-burial-funeral-michelle-crooks.

I also found a really good website for alternative funerals, ’documenting the emerging natural burial and home funeral movements. Think it’s American? Looks like it has loads of resources and information.

Drunk cycling… debate
Posted at: 2009-07-28 15:36:53
I read recently that of the deaths of cyclist in London per year, the mount of drink consumed by the cyclist played a part, with a couple of people who died having been over the legal limit (I’m sorry, I don’t have the article link to hand, but I will try and find it and post it below).

I was wondering what people thought of cycling after going drinking?
Do people do it? Or do people dissaprove?
